I’ll let the few posts I have up speak for the intent of the blog.
As for me, I’m Alistair Williamson, a Scot, born in Malawi now living and working in Portland, Oregon, in the USA.
My investigation into company design began about 10 years ago. I’ve always been engaged by the design of things; be they tree houses, bottle-tops, bikes or debate. How can things be better designed to more effectively and elegantly serve their purpose. That led me to a degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of York in England and to work on product and user-interface design at Tektronix in the US. Later a friend and I co-founded WebCriteria where our products helped define and measure the success of business websites.
During those 5 years at WebCriteria I discovered that companies themselves draw from very few basic designs. And those designs have very few purposes. Given that companies are so influential in shaping our world it seemed like there should be more designs to chose from.
After WebCriteria I determined to work at a company with a completely different design and spent 6 years at Equal Exchange, a fair trade worker co-op, as both capital coordinator, and later as board chair too.
Over the last 15 years I’ve been President or Board Chair of an LLC, a C-corporation, a worker cooperative, a sole-proprietorship, and a non-profit. I’ve been an employee of large British and American companies. I believe I’m beginning to get a feel for what works and what doesn’t.
You can see a little of what else I’m up to online at www.notjustus.com.
